I Tried Passive Income for 6 Months: Here's What Actually Worked (and What Totally Failed)

Let me be real for a second. When I first started looking into passive income, I imagined myself sipping iced coffee on a beach while my bank account magically grew. That was six months ago. Since then, I’ve tried multiple methods—from affiliate marketing to creating digital products—and the reality hit hard. Some things worked, others flopped miserably. Here’s the full breakdown.

What I Tried (and Why)

I didn’t have a huge budget, so I focused on low-cost or free strategies:

  • Affiliate marketing (through PartnerStack)
  • Creating and selling an eBook on Gumroad
  • Starting a faceless YouTube channel (yup, AI voice and all)
  • Running AdSense ads on a blog I created via Blogger

What Actually Worked

Affiliate marketing brought in the first real dollars. I joined PartnerStack, promoted a few SaaS tools I actually use, and surprisingly earned $93 in my second month. Not life-changing, but it felt amazing. Here’s the one I had the most success with: Thinkific affiliate link.

Next up was the eBook. I wrote it in Google Docs, turned it into a PDF, and uploaded it to Gumroad. I priced it at $7. Only two people bought it in 3 months. Not a huge win, but still… it's something.

What Totally Failed

The YouTube channel idea sounded genius at 2AM. I used AI tools like Pictory and a synthetic voice. But the videos got barely any views. I didn’t know how to optimize titles or thumbnails properly. I also got burned out quickly. It turns out YouTube isn’t really “passive” at all when you’re just starting out.

The blog? I posted 12 articles in the first month and linked it with Adsterra. Earnings in 6 months: $1.82. Not even enough for a cup of coffee.

Lessons I Wish I Knew Before

  • You need traffic. No traffic = no money.
  • Affiliate income takes time. Build trust before pushing links.
  • Not all "passive" income is truly passive. Expect to work hard upfront.
  • Platforms like CPAGrip can work, but only if you already understand how to drive offers to an audience.

What I'm Doing Differently Now

I’ve decided to focus more on content I actually enjoy creating—like blog posts for ToLearn.Space (shameless plug) and building email lists with value-driven lead magnets.

Also, I’m doubling down on tools that help me save time, like AI writing tools, content schedulers, and even simple automation via Zapier.

Final Thoughts

Passive income is not a scam—but it’s not magic either. It requires time, consistency, and (honestly) some trial and error. I wasted time on things that didn’t work for me, but I also discovered what I actually enjoy doing online.

If you’re just starting out, here’s my honest advice: pick one method, stick to it for 3 months, and don’t expect overnight success. That beach coffee might still happen—but it won’t be next week.
